The Obama administration will not offer financial assistance to Puerto Rico, a senior Treasury official emphasized Tuesday on the eve of Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew's visit to the struggling territory. The official reiterated President Barack Obama's position on the debt crisis in Puerto Rico, saying the federal government would not offer a transfer of funds or assume liability for Puerto Rico, which is weighed down by about $70 billion in debt and a decade of recession.
